Why Bristol organisations are moving to Azure
The Bristol and Bath area has a distinctive economy. It includes aerospace and advanced engineering clustered around Filton, a strong technology and semiconductor sector, a thriving creative and media industry, and two major universities. The pressures that lead to migration are familiar:
- Ageing on-site servers and storage approaching end of life
- Windows Server 2016 end of support in January 2027, and SQL Server 2016 already out of support
- VMware renewal costs rising after Broadcom's acquisition
- Growing data volumes, especially design files, media assets and research data
- Resilience, as a single server room is a single point of failure
Two UK regions on your doorstep
Bristol is unusually well placed for Azure. UK West is in Cardiff, just across the Severn, and UK South is in the London area. A typical resilient design for a South West organisation:
| Role | Azure region | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Production | UK South | Availability zones and the widest service range |
| Disaster recovery | UK West | Separate geography, UK data residency |
| Backups | Geo-redundant across both | Protection against regional outages |
Engineering, media and large-file workloads
Bristol migrations often involve large files and specialist applications. We plan for:
- Large-file storage: Azure Files or Azure NetApp Files for performance-sensitive shares, with Azure File Sync to keep local caches fast
- Licence servers and PDM/PLM databases moved to Azure VMs
- GPU workloads assessed for Azure Virtual Desktop or left on local workstations where that makes more sense
- Export-control and IP considerations for aerospace and defence supply-chain organisations, with data kept in UK regions and access tightly controlled
How a Bristol Azure migration works
- Free assessment. Two minutes online, then a short call.
- Discovery. Azure Migrate profiles servers, storage and dependencies.
- Fixed-scope proposal. One-off cost, monthly forecast and funding options.
- Landing zone and migration waves. Production in UK South, DR in UK West.
- Decommission and optimise. Retire old hardware and tune ongoing costs.

Should a Bristol organisation use Azure UK West or UK South?
Usually UK South for production, because it has availability zones and the widest range of Azure services, and UK West for disaster recovery. UK West is geographically close to Bristol but offers fewer services, so it's rarely the best primary region.
Can engineering and CAD workloads run in Azure?
Many can, including licence servers, PDM/PLM databases and file storage. Graphics-intensive CAD is usually best kept on local workstations or delivered through GPU-enabled Azure Virtual Desktop. We assess each workload individually.
Do you work with universities and colleges?
Yes. Higher and further education institutions often have large, mixed estates with research and administrative systems, which suit a phased Azure migration.
Do you cover the wider South West and South Wales?
Yes, including Bath, Gloucester, Swindon, Newport and Cardiff.
