Why Manchester organisations are moving to Azure
Greater Manchester has a large and varied business base, from MediaCityUK's digital and creative firms to financial and professional services in the city centre, manufacturers across the wider region, housing associations, colleges and NHS trusts. What they often have in common is infrastructure that has grown over years and is now due for a decision.
The triggers we see most often:
- Co-location renewals. Manchester is a major UK co-location market, and renewal pricing for power and space has risen.
- Server room risk. Single on-site server rooms are exposed to power, cooling and flood issues.
- VMware licensing changes after Broadcom's acquisition.
- End of support for Windows Server 2016 (12 January 2027) and SQL Server 2016 (July 2026).
- Small IT teams spending too much time on hardware and patching.
Latency and data residency for North West users
There's no Azure region in Manchester itself. Workloads are hosted in UK South (London area), with UK West (Cardiff) available for disaster recovery. For users in the North West, round-trip latency to UK South is typically well within what business applications, SQL databases and virtual desktops need. We measure it from your sites during the assessment.
For organisations that need private connectivity, ExpressRoute is available through UK peering locations. That gives you a dedicated connection rather than the public internet.
Sectors we often see in the North West
| Sector | Typical migration focus |
|---|---|
| Digital & tech | Moving legacy hosted servers to Azure, cost optimisation |
| Financial & professional services | Resilience, security controls, exiting co-location |
| Manufacturing | ERP and SQL Server databases, file servers, site connectivity |
| Housing associations | Housing management systems, end-of-support servers |
| Education | Server room exits, identity and file migration |
How a Manchester Azure migration works
- Free assessment. Tell us about your environment in two minutes.
- Discovery. Azure Migrate maps servers, performance and dependencies.
- Fixed-scope proposal. One-off cost, monthly Azure forecast and funding options.
- Landing zone and migration. Secure Azure foundation, then migration in tested waves.
- Decommission. Clear the server room or co-lo and hand back the space.

Is there an Azure region in Manchester?
No. Azure's UK regions are UK South (London area) and UK West (Cardiff). For Manchester users, latency to UK South is low enough for virtually all business applications, including databases and virtual desktops.
We use a Manchester co-location data centre. Can we move straight to Azure?
Yes. Your co-lo can be connected to Azure by VPN or ExpressRoute during the migration, so workloads move in waves without disruption. Once everything's moved, the racks can be cleared and the contract ended.
Do you work with housing associations and education providers?
Yes. Housing associations, colleges and multi-academy trusts often run ageing on-premises servers with small IT teams, which makes a well-planned Azure migration particularly valuable.
Can you visit us in Manchester?
Yes. Discovery workshops can be run on-site anywhere in Greater Manchester and the North West. Day-to-day migration work is remote and usually out of hours.
